Tempier Rose 2004 is here!

Well, the new vintage of Tempier rose (from 2004) is here, and it’s unbelievably tasty! The wine is deep salmon pink, much darker in color than the pale 2003, and powerful like the 2001. In fact, the latter vintage is probably the best comparison at the moment: savory, powerful, good acid, and a delicate finish with a bit of citrus. I have a feeling this will age as well as the 2001 or better, so I’m going to try to stock up a bit on the 2004. If you don’t have a wine store nearby that stocks the Tempier, I’d recommend ordering a few bottles directly from Kermit Lynch Wine Merchants in Berkeley…you won’t be sorry.

  18. Yeah, my experience with the roses is that being really cold – refrigerator cold – tends to accentuate a bit of the bitterness on the palate and mute the nose a bit. I tend to pull the bottle out and let it sit for awhile before serving, preferring it more at “cellar temperature” but not really room temp…

Can’t wait to try the 2003 rouge…thanks for the tasting note!

  19. Sorry Mark, I wrote Rose 2003 instead of the 2004 that I was actually drinking. I asked Alden at Vinography at he mentioned that perhaps it was too cold and I think he could be right – it did open after warming up. The 2003 Rouge was very much alive and kicking, smokey, muscular and showing a lot of terroir – a great character.

  20. I haven’t tasted the 2003 reds yet (I think they’re still prearrival here in the US) but the 2003 rose to me always had a fairly delicate but “sharp” profile, definitely a crisper and more steely version of the rose than we’re used to. Certainly 2001 and 2004 are much “lusher” and fuller rose vintages, so I guess I’m not surprised the 2003 seems closed. I don’t know what to say about the rose except that it’s just a different style than most years, in my opinion.

Am interested in your thoughts on the 2003 red, since I haven’t gotten to try it yet…obviously it’s young but did it compare well to recent vintages?

  21. hi Mark,

I tasted the Tempier Rose 2003 (and Rouge 2003) last night and was surprised how closed it was. I had the 2001 6 months ago and thought it was softer and more charming. Do you think it is just too young or is dormant due to some phase or the fact it just got shipped (to Iceland) two weeks ago ? Having tasted these two vintages I think a back nose is perhaps a characteristic. The 2003 did however open up after several hours and I wonder if decanting could be positive.
